Something to Blog About
Well, here comes the inevitable post in which I keep this site running and the visitors trickling in each day. I suppose thats the great things about blogs, you still visit the ones you like even if you know they aren't being maintained properly.
Blogs are unique type of beast. They are personalised, yet so many of the blogs I read and indeed most people read are written by people who often refuse to give out their photo or their residence. Even I do it. I wonder why? Is it really that personalised after all? Privacy is regarded as champion yet if we needed the privacy of our thoughts, our feelings and opinions, why blog at all?
Then, businesses are now taking to blogs to bring a "human face" to their corporations and their products/services. Well, it seems to me that blogs were, are and will be about the person and are definitely non profit websites (the reason why I don't use Google AD-Sense). I am worried that these corporations will ruin the trust created by genuine bloggers and use it to create a webspace that is again filled with fear. Blogs seem to be a solace amongst the popups and the constant net advertising, soon this solace may vanish forever. The blog will no longer be a place of personalities, lives and experiences, it will be all about marketing, marketing and more marketing.
Even people like Paul Thurott, whose site I visit regularly are somewhat blogging on the premise that there comments will be taken seriously by numerous readers who will in turn invest their money in certain products. While I respect Paul's opinion and find that he has a reasonably neutral point of view, influential people like him should really keep the blog as something to express themselves with, not to describe or review the latest software or hardware.
Ultimately I believe that only when you actually have something to say do you blog. Which is the reason why when I don't have something to say that is worthwhile, I don't blog. Many geeks (at least that ones I know) blog continuously just to say they are bloggers. It's not about that. It's about you and when you don't feel like talking, keep your mouth shut (or in this case, don't touch the keyboard).
Plogs, Vlogs, and even Podcasts all detract from the real nature of the blog. It's all about literature, expressing yourself. It's not a sounding board and it certainly is not a forum. Comments are great, but many sites thrive on typing something just to generating comments, it's not about that.
It's all about you, and it's all about what you have to say.
